IORA Council of Ministers Meeting to be held in Colombo next week

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)’s 23rd Council of Ministers Meeting will take place in Sri Lanka on October 11 in Colombo.

As a result, the 23rd IORA Council of Ministers Meeting will take place in Sri Lanka the following week. Senior ministers from IORA member states and dialogue partners will also attend.

Sixteen ministers, including the foreign ministers of Bangladesh, India, Iran, Mauritius, Malaysia, and South Africa, will attend the Council of Ministers Meeting in Colombo. Additionally, senior-level representatives from Australia, Comoros, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Tanzania, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen will attend.

The highest governing body of the IORA is the Council of Ministers.

Ali Sabry, the foreign minister of Sri Lanka, will preside over the Council when Bangladesh’s foreign minister, who is now in that position, relinquishes it.

The 25th meeting of the Committee of IORA Senior Officials, which will be presided over by Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane, will take place before the Council on October 9 and 10.

An international group of nations on the Indian Ocean’s rim, the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) was founded in 1997. Africa, West Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, and Oceania are all represented among its members. IORA now has 23 Member States and 11 Dialogue Partners among its members.

At the 23rd Council of Ministers Meeting, Sri Lanka will take over as IORA’s chairman for the years 2023 to 2025.

The six key areas designated by the Association will be discussed by the ministers as they consider ways to work together in the areas of trade and investment, maritime safety and security, fisheries management, disaster risk management, and the blue economy, among others. They will follow the advice of the 25th Committee of IORA Senior Officials’ suggestions.

The IORA Secretariat in Mauritius directors and Dr. Salman Al Farisi, the organization’s secretary general, will also attend the meeting.

During their tour to Sri Lanka, the visiting ministers will also contact President Ranil Wickremesinghe collectively and have one-on-one conversations with Ali Sabry, the foreign minister of Sri Lanka, as well as other ministers.
