The driver who ran a Police Constable over with an SUV on Thursday night (05 October) and caused his death has been remanded in custody until 10 October.

The Colombo Magistrate Court No.07 (Traffic Court) issued a remand order for the 27-year-old SUV driver this afternoon, October 6.

Police Constable Manoj Priyankara, 25, passed away from his injuries this morning while being treated at the Colombo National Hospital after being struck by an errant driver yesterday evening.

Police reported that the SUV driver had been detained shortly after the collision and that the officer had been ran over because he had been unable to control the speed of the vehicle. After striking the fountain in the middle of the Independence Square Roundabout, the car eventually came to a stop.

The driver was identified as a Narahenpita-area resident and technical engineer working for a private enterprise. According to reports, he is the son of a retired volunteer obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked for many years at the police hospital before receiving the title of Deputy Senior Superintendent of Police.
