While cruising in the deep waters off Dondra Head, the Sri Lanka Navy detained six people who were in possession of an advanced satellite gadget.
Based on a tip-off they got, the Navy initiated a search operation that resulted in the arrest.
After being presented before Colombo Additional Magistrate Thilina Gamage on Sunday (08), the Police Narcotics Bureau was given permission to hold the group of arrested people until October 14 for additional investigative purposes.
The satellite gadget that was discovered in their possession was more sophisticated than the typical fishing equipment, and the police have notified the Additional Magistrate that they are continuing their investigation to determine whether the defendants were trafficking heroin.
The police are conducting investigations into the case items, which included three SIM cards, according to the police officers from the police narcotics bureau who notified the additional magistrate about them.
