The updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Sports between Sri Lanka and Australia has been signed.

Roshan Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Sports, and Tim Watts, Australia’s Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, signed the MOU yesterday.

The signing of the MoU will deepen the long-standing sporting relations between Australia and Sri Lanka, according to the Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka.

It will promote collaboration in a variety of sectors, such as coach education, training, sports science, sports medicine, gender equality, and anti-corruption and anti-doping procedures.

After the agreement was signed, Assistant Minister Watts played a game of cricket with the men’s and women’s national teams of Sri Lanka.

He also discussed the shared sporting past with Sri Lankan cricketing legend Aravinda de Silva and Sri Lanka Cricket officials at the Sri Lanka Cricket Museum.

Tim Watts, assistant foreign minister of Australia, commented on the agreement, saying, “Sport is a shared passion and links us together, highlighted by our friendly but fierce rivalry on the cricket pitch, and I am pleased to renew the Memorandum of Understanding in Sports Cooperation between Australia and Sri Lanka.”

Roshan Ranasinghe, Sri Lanka’s minister of sports, added, “We look forward to partnering under this MOU to uncover and foster Sri Lankan and Australian talent, regardless of our sporting rivalry. It will give us the framework to collaborate in order to maximise the performance of our athletes and promote them internationally.
