Nine Iranian nationals who were detained for drug trafficking four years ago have been given the death penalty by the Colombo High Court.

The four pled guilty to their allegations of smuggling heroin into Sri Lanka, and Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja issued the pertinent judgement.

However, in accordance with the international accords Sri Lanka has signed, it was decided to order the extradition of the nine foreign citizens to Iran.

The Sri Lanka Navy detained nine Iranian nationals in March 2019 in the waters off Akurala with a significant amount of heroin aboard a trawler.
