Kanchana Wijesekera, the minister of power and energy, has denied claims that a meeting was held to consider bringing back Sri Lanka’s National Fuel Pass QR system.
Minister Wijeseker said on ‘X’ that there have been no discussions about reintroducing the National Fuel Pass QR system or any fuel quota system by the government, the Ministry of Power and Energy, or the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
According to him, the Ministry, CPC, and Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) have simply discussed cargo requirements for the upcoming year.
In order to maintain a greater buffer stock, discussions have also been had about increasing the storage capabilities at CPSTL Kollonnawa, the Mutthurajawela terminals, and regional depots, he continued.
The minister’s remarks are in response to rumours that the National Fuel Pass QR system has been reinstated in the local media outlet Ada Derana and in The Morning newspaper.
The National Fuel Pass QR system was shut down by the Ministry of Power and Energy in September 2023.
After Sri Lanka experienced a fuel crisis in 2022 that caused lengthy lines at gas stations, a QR system was originally implemented for fuel purchases.
