The Department of Wildlife Conservation said that at least 400 elephant deaths have been documented in Sri Lanka so far in 2023.
The department’s director general, Chandana Sooriyabandara, claims that at least 200 elephants have perished due to a variety of causes, such as human-elephant conflicts, shootings, or automobile accidents.
Chandana Sooriyabandara added that it has been noted that a number of wild elephants have also perished this year as a result of different illnesses.
He continued by stating that there are currently about 6,000 elephants living in Sri Lanka.
