According to the Ceylon energy Board (CEB), illegally altered energy metres and installations have cost the company close to Rs. 80 million in losses in the first eight months of 2023.

In an effort to evade paying for the energy used, some people have turned to unlawfully tapping into power lines and tampering with metres, according to the state-run electrical provider.

As a result, between January and August of this year, the CEB suffered a loss from electricity theft totaling Rs. 79,074,856.

The CEB reported that 1,041 raids against illegally tapping into electrical wires and 81 against metre tampering were carried out during this time.
