Mahinda Deshapriya, the chairman of the Delimitation Committee, claimed that the nation’s democracy was delivered a “deathblow” by extending the terms of the incumbent local government officials without conducting elections.
In this context, the former chairman of the Elections Commission disclosed to the media that the decision to postpone the Local Government (LG) elections was made without consulting the Delimitation Committee.
Deshapriya went on to comment, pointing out that the Sri Lankan Constitution prohibits holding the presidential election sooner or after the designated period of time.
“The Presidential Election cannot be held soon,” he declared as a result. It also cannot be postponed. It needs to take place in 2024 between September 17 and October 17.
