The announcement was made on Monday (13), by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, that the Department of Motor Traffic will go digital in 2024.

The Head of State stated that a trial project involving 200 electric buses will also begin in 2024 in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) in the Western Province during his speech announcing the 2024 budget in the Parliament this afternoon.

In order to reduce automobile and passenger traffic in Kandy’s old city and integrate train, bus, and other taxi services, the Kandy multi-transport centre project will also be executed in January 2024 with loan help from the World Bank.

The President said that Rs. 1.5 billion will be set out for the construction of this center’s access roads.

Wickremesinghe, meantime, declared that the Department of Railways would finish restoring the Anuradhapura to Mihintale railway track by January 2024 and that Rs. 200 million would be set up for this reason in the 2024 budget.

He added that China and India will work together to start construction on the second phase of the Central Motorway, which would run from Kadawatha to Mirigama, as soon as the process of restructuring foreign debt was over.
