Budget 2024 commits Rs. 500mn to boost English literacy by 2034

During his 2024 Budget Speech today (13), President Ranil Wickremesinghe promised to set aside Rs. 500 million for the creation of a national initiative to improve English literacy in Sri Lanka.

By 2034, he stated, all citizens should be literate in English. This is a ten-year programme.

The Head of State went on to say that young people in the nation who are not able to attend college should be given the chance to work both domestically and abroad.

He emphasised the significance of giving adults employed in the public and commercial sectors the chance to learn new things.

In light of this, the President suggested giving the Sri Lanka Foundation Rs. 150 million to fund the technological and infrastructure modernization projects required to offer services and conduct training sessions.
