Selling of newborn twins: Three suspects granted bail, mother refuses to take custody

Date:

The three suspects arrested for selling newborn twins have been granted bail today (Dec.08).

The trio was released on bails each valued at Rs. 100,000.

When the case was called before Welisara Magistrate’s Court, the mother of the twins, one of the arrestees, has told the court that she cannot take custody of the infants.

Accordingly, the two newborns were handed over to the probation and childcare service officers.

Further hearing of the case was subsequently fixed for January 12.

The mother of the infants had reportedly sold her one-week-old infant twins to two women in Ragama and Kelaniya, for a sum of Rs.  25,000 each.

On Thursday (Dec.07), the 23-year-old woman from Piliyandala was arrested, along with the two other women from Ragama and Kelaniya who allegedly ‘purchased’ the babies.

The arrests were made during an investigation launched following an anonymous tip-off received by the OIC of the Ragama Police pertaining to a woman in the area.

The three suspects were produced before the Welisara Magistrate’s Court and remanded until today.

It was reported that the twins were born at the Castle Street Hospital for Women.
