Eight inmates at the Galle Hospital are currently receiving treatment for suspected meningitis at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, following the recent death of an inmate from the same illness, Prisons Commissioner and Media Spokesman Gamini. B. Dissanayake said.
Meanwhile, all activities at the Galle Prison were limited, effective from 04 January, following the death of an inmate due to meningitis.
Accordingly, as per the strict health measures implemented subsequent to the death of a 29-year-old inmate, all new inmates slated to serve their sentences at the Galle Prison will be transferred to the Angunakolapelessa Prison.
The Prisons Commissioner further noted that visitors will also be permitted only under strict health measures at the Galle Prison.
On 03 January, a 29-year-old resident of Kottawagama had died of meningitis, while receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
Last week, two inmates from the Matara Prison too, succumbed to meningitis, while 17 others were hospitalized with high fever.
