In response to a recent incident where a lorry driver lost his life after being shot by a police officer in civilian attire, the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has issued a directive prohibiting officers in civilian clothing from engaging in the inspection of vehicles. The 40-year-old lorry driver, a father of three, was reportedly shot by a police officer from the Narammala Police during a vehicle inspection at a checkpoint in Dampelessa, Narammala.

Eyewitnesses claim that two police officers in civilian attire had pursued the lorry, eventually stopping it with a motorcycle. The senior police officer then allegedly loaded his weapon before approaching the driver and firing at him. The Sub-Inspector (SI) responsible for the shooting has been arrested and remanded until January 23, 2024, by the Narammala Magistrate’s Court. The new order aims to prevent such incidents by restricting civilian-clothed officers from participating in vehicle inspections.
