A Pakistan court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to a 10-year jail term for allegedly leaking state secrets, his second conviction in recent months.
The case involves accusations that Khan disclosed the contents of a secret cable sent by the country’s ambassador in Washington to the government in Islamabad.
Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), plans to challenge the decision, labeling it a ‘sham case.’
This verdict, just days before the general election, follows Khan’s earlier three-year sentence in a corruption case, ruling him out of the upcoming polls.
Despite legal efforts, his release from jail seems unlikely as he contests these charges in a higher court.
Khan claims the cable exposes a conspiracy by the Pakistani military and the U.S. government to overthrow his administration in 2022, an allegation denied by Washington and the Pakistani military.
The former prime minister contends that the cable’s contents were already in the media from other sources.
