Commanders in the Israeli military have in recent weeks begun instructing soldiers to set fire to residential homes in Gaza without the necessary legal approval, reports the Haaretz newspaper.

Soldiers have destroyed several hundred buildings this way, according to Haaretz, citing information provided by unnamed sources.

Earlier this month, Israel was also accused of attempting to create a “buffer zone” between itself and Gaza, after satellite imagery showed that it had demolished hundreds of buildings within the besieged enclave that sit within 1km (0.6 miles) of the border.
