The Ministry of Justice and Prison Affairs is set to launch a program placing individuals convicted of civil offences under house arrest.

State Minister Anuradha Jayaratne revealed the initiative, stating that GPS technology will monitor those under house arrest, supervised by prison officers and local police.

The move aims to enforce court-imposed conditions while reducing the current prison population of 33,000, which exceeds the capacity of 13,000.

The proposed law is in the drafting stage at the Legal Draftsman’s Department.
