On February 5th, Kashmir Day, also known as Solidarity Day with Kashmiris, is observed in Pakistan, marking a significant event in the country’s geopolitical calendar. The day aims to shed light on the ongoing struggle of Kashmiris for self-determination and freedom in Indian-administered Kashmir, recognizing their sacrifices. The history of this event traces back to the 1990s when a demonstration by Kashmiris faced brutal retaliation from Indian soldiers, resulting in the death of 91 innocent Kashmiris. In response, both the Pakistani and Kashmiri governments decided to dedicate a day on the Pakistani calendar to honor Kashmiris.
Various activities, including seminars, processions, demonstrations, and the creation of hand chains symbolizing the unbreakable bond between Pakistan and Kashmir, take place nationwide and globally where Pakistanis reside. These events aim to inform people about the atrocities committed by India in Kashmir over the past seven decades. Special prayers are held for the liberation of Kashmir, and officials at all levels actively participate in discussions supporting the Kashmir cause.
Pakistan High Commission in Sri Lanka observed Kashmir Solidarity day by exhibiting photos and videos to show the agony of Kashmiri people occupied by India.
Kashmir Day holds significance in Pakistani history as it raises awareness about the protracted conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir.
Pakistan consistently emphasizes Kashmir’s right to self-determination at international, multilateral, and bilateral levels, pointing out India’s illegal occupation. The event also aims to highlight human rights abuses committed by Indian security forces in the region, as recognized by UN resolutions.
This year, the importance of Kashmir Day is heightened as it precedes Pakistan’s general elections. Civil society organizations are keenly observing which political party will genuinely address the Kashmir issue.
The elected government is expected to prioritize resolving the Kashmir conflict, upholding constitutional ideals, protecting human rights, promoting social justice, and ensuring effective governance.
Beyond symbolism, Kashmir Day is an attempt to draw international attention to the ongoing conflict and its impact on peace-building efforts under UN resolutions. It serves as a day for Pakistanis to express solidarity with Kashmiris, emphasizing the plight of those living in Indian- occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
