A motion has been filed at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka challenging the registration of the National People’s Power (NPP) as a political party by the National Election Commission. The motion, submitted by activist and Secretary of the Vinivida Foundation, Attorney-at-Law Nagananda Kodituwakku, questions the legality of the NPP’s registration while also addressing the rejection of the Vinivida Foundation’s own application for political party status.
Kodituwakku filed the motion during the consideration of a writ petition against the Election Commission’s decision to decline the Vinivida Foundation’s registration as a political entity. In his petition, Kodituwakku highlights that the NPP’s registration violates the law since it is an offshoot of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), an already registered political party.
Citing this violation, Kodituwakku urges the court to grant him time to present additional evidence supporting his motion. The challenge underscores the ongoing legal complexities surrounding political party registration in Sri Lanka, signaling a potential legal battle ahead.
