Central Bank penalizes two top banks

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has levied penalties totaling Rs. 14 million on three financial institutions from September 27 to December 31, 2023.

The penalties were imposed on MMBL Money Transfer (Pvt) Ltd, Bank of Ceylon, and People’s Bank for non-compliance with the Financial Transactions Reporting Act.

The FIU, as the regulator for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism, has credited the penalties to the Consolidated Fund.
