Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday (18 Feb.) appealed to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure the release and repatriation of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.
“These fishermen are not only Tamils but also proud citizens of India. The ongoing detention of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy is deeply concerning and a matter of grave importance,” the Chief Minister conveyed on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).
He highlighted a significant surge in arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen over the past two days, emphasizing that they are being treated as repeat offenders, resulting in prolonged detention.
Stalin underscored the threat posed to the fishermen’s livelihood, noting that several expensive mechanized boats have been seized by the Sri Lankan Navy and subsequently nationalized by the Sri Lankan government.
