The Cabinet has given authorization to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft a comprehensive bill on child rights.

The government has highlighted the increasing challenges in safeguarding the well-being of children due to recent societal changes. There have been numerous reported cases of children being subjected to various forms of abuse, engaging in harmful activities, and being denied their rights.

In response, the government has decided to develop a unified law that encompasses all rights outlined in the Child Rights Convention, in addition to the existing legal provisions aimed at ensuring the safety and protection of Sri Lankan children.

Previously, the Cabinet had approved the introduction of a new law titled the “Child Protection Act” in accordance with their decision outlined in the document ‘Next Twenty-Five Years’ dated 09.01.2023.

Consequently, the Cabinet has endorsed the proposal put forward by the President, acting as the Minister of Women, Child Affairs, and Social Empowerment, to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft the comprehensive bill on child rights.
