Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala revealed in Parliament today (4) that a political group is attempting to incite ethnic unrest by spreading fake social media posts, including old Mahaviru commemoration videos. Arrests have been made, including a defeated New Democratic Front candidate, he said.

Meanwhile Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed yesterday (3) the government’s commitment to repealing the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) but stressed its continued use against extremism until new laws are enacted. Four individuals were recently arrested for promoting banned LTTE activities, he added.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa criticized the PTA’s use, alleging suppression of free speech. However, the government assured that while freedom of expression is protected, actions promoting racism or extremism will not be tolerated.
