On February 22, 2025, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia proudly celebrates Founding Day, marking 298 years since Imam Muhammad bin Saud established the first Saudi state in 1727. This day is a tribute to the Kingdom’s rich history, resilience, and the visionary leadership that has shaped its path to modern prosperity.
Imam Muhammad bin Saud founded the first Saudi state in Diriyah, uniting Arabian tribes under a stable governance system based on Islamic values, justice, and economic progress. This was the beginning of Saudi Arabia’s journey toward unity and strength, later culminating in the establishment of the modern Kingdom in 1932 under King Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Unlike National Day (September 23), which celebrates the unification of Saudi Arabia, Founding Day (February 22) reflects the deep historical roots of the Kingdom. Officially declared a national holiday in 2022 by King Salman bin Abdulaziz, it honors Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage and the strength of its people.
This year’s Founding Day celebrations in Saudi Arabia will feature historical exhibitions, cultural performances, and storytelling to highlight Saudi heritage. Traditional parades and fireworks in Riyadh, Jeddah, and other major cities. Recognition of Saudi citizens for their contributions to national progress.
To mark this special occasion, the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Sri Lanka has also organized a celebration in Colombo under the leadership of His Excellency Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Sri Lanka Khalidh Hamoud Al-Qahthani, reflecting the strong ties between the two nations.
50 Years of Saudi-Sri Lanka Diplomatic Relations
This year’s Founding Day is even more significant as Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, established in 1974. Over the past five decades, the two nations have strengthened their partnership in trade, employment, and cultural exchange.
A commemorative logo was unveiled in Riyadh on February 5, 2025, with the participation of Sri Lankan Ambassador Ameer Ajwad and Saudi Deputy Minister Abdul Majeed Al-Shammari. During the event, Ambassador Ajwad highlighted that Sri Lanka’s ties with Arabia date back to the 7th century, when King Aggabodhi III sent an envoy to Prophet Muhammad in Medina.
As Saudi Arabia commemorates Founding Day 2025, it not only honors nearly three centuries of history but also reaffirms its deep friendship with Sri Lanka, paving the way for even stronger cooperation in the years ahead.
