Sri Lanka took a major step forward in reproductive healthcare yesterday (23 March)  with the launch of its first-ever sperm bank at Castle Street Hospital for Women in Colombo. This milestone initiative aims to support individuals and couples struggling with fertility challenges by providing access to high-quality donor sperm for medical treatments.

A sperm bank is a specialized facility that collects, stores, and distributes donated sperm for use in fertility procedures such as artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Globally, such banks have been instrumental in helping people overcome fertility issues, particularly in cases of male infertility or for single women wishing to conceive.

Hospital Director Dr. Ajith Kumara Danthanarayana emphasized that the facility will operate under strict confidentiality and privacy regulations, ensuring donor anonymity and recipient protection in line with international medical standards.

To maintain the highest safety and quality standards, all sperm donors will undergo comprehensive medical screenings before their samples are accepted. The hospital has also called on men to contribute to this initiative by donating sperm, recognizing their role in advancing reproductive healthcare in Sri Lanka.
