India has surpassed Sri Lanka to become the world’s second-largest tea exporter, shipping 254 million kg (Mkg) in 2024, according to the Tea Board of India. Sri Lanka, which was India’s closest competitor, fell behind as India expanded its export volumes.
In 2023, both countries were nearly equal in exports at around 231 Mkg each. However, India’s additional 24 Mkg in 2024 pushed Sri Lanka to third place. This shift marks a significant change in global tea trade dynamics, as Sri Lanka has traditionally been a strong player in the market.
India’s tea exports, valued at Rs 7,112 crore, were its highest since 2018 (256 Mkg). Growth in the orthodox tea segment and government support played a key role in India’s rise, while Sri Lanka faced production and export challenges.
“With favorable export policies, India is poised for further growth, while Sri Lanka will need to strategize to regain lost ground,” said Prabir Kumar Bhattacharjee, secretary general of the Tea Association of India.
