In a gesture honoring the legacy of a key figure in Sri Lanka’s educational and political history, the residence of the late M.H.M. Ashraf, founding leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), has been officially handed over to South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.
The ceremonial handover took place last Monday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Dr. U.L. Abdul Majeed, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, received the property documents from Aman Ashraf, son of the late leader, in the presence of senior university administrators.
“This was the only immovable property my father owned in this village,” Aman Ashraf stated during the function, underlining the symbolic importance of the donation.
M.H.M. Ashraf is remembered not only as a political pioneer but also as a champion of higher education. His instrumental role in the establishment of South Eastern University in 1995 stands as a testament to his vision. With the support of then-President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Ashraf worked tirelessly to secure a national university for the predominantly Muslim region of Oluvil.
He is widely regarded as a significant contributor to the advancement of education for all communities across Sri Lanka.
University officials hailed the donation as a valuable addition to the institution’s resources and a fitting tribute to a leader whose commitment to education shaped the futures of countless Sri Lankans.
