Colombo, June 18 — Sri Lanka’s Parliament today adjourned proceedings scheduled to discuss the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran after the opposition MP who proposed the debate failed to appear in the House.
The session, scheduled from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, was adjourned until 9:30 AM tomorrow by Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvi Sali, citing the absence of Ajith P. Perera, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), main opposition, parliamentarian who had moved the adjournment motion for the debate.
The motion had been included in today’s agenda following a request by Opposition Leader Kayantha Karunathilaka during yesterday’s (June 17) sitting, where he sought parliamentary time to raise concerns over the implications of the Israel-Iran conflict on Sri Lanka. The Speaker had initially not granted the request, but later scheduled the debate for today.
However, the session could not proceed as planned due to the absence of the initiating MP, leading to frustration among some members and the temporary suspension of proceedings.
Parliament is expected to reconvene tomorrow morning, with uncertainty remaining over whether the postponed debate will take place.
