The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism has announced the reopening of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Cyprus, which will become operational from July 20. This decision comes amid rising concerns over increased Israeli land acquisitions in Cyprus and a growing Sri Lankan diaspora on the island.
According to the Ministry, embassy staff will depart Sri Lanka on July 15 to take up their duties in Nicosia. Over 15,000 Sri Lankans are currently residing in Cyprus, many of whom had requested the resumption of direct diplomatic services.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath, speaking on the matter, said the embassy’s reopening will enhance bilateral ties, ensure the welfare of Sri Lankans in Cyprus, facilitate new employment opportunities, and promote investment links.
Since the previous closure of the mission, diplomatic affairs concerning Cyprus were handled via the Sri Lankan Embassy in Turkey. The re-establishment of the Cyprus mission marks a renewed focus on strengthening Sri Lanka’s overseas presence and support for its citizens abroad.
