Galle Face Green Reclaims Its Vista: Mayor’s Initiative Clears Path to the Sea

The iconic Galle Face Green, a cherished public space and a symbol of Colombo’s vibrant seaside life, has undergone a significant transformation, with the long-standing sea view now fully restored. In a decisive move spearheaded by Mayor Vraîe Cally

Balthazaar, the area has been cleared of all temporary food stalls and shops, a fixture for many years.
For decades, the sprawling green expanse was home to a bustling array of street vendors, offering everything from savory Isso Vadei to refreshing Nelli Crush. While these vendors were an integral part of the Galle Face experience for locals and tourists alike, their temporary structures had gradually encroached upon the seaward side of the promenade, obscuring the panoramic view of the Indian Ocean.
Mayor Balthazaar’s initiative, part of a broader city beautification and public space management program, aims to enhance the aesthetic and recreational value of Galle Face Green. The clearing operation, which began last week, saw the peaceful removal of all structures, paving the way for an unobstructed view of the horizon for the first time in years.
“Galle Face Green belongs to the people of Colombo and to all Sri Lankans,” stated Mayor Balthazaar. “It is a national treasure. Our goal is to ensure that everyone can enjoy its beauty and tranquility without obstruction. This move is about reclaiming our public spaces and restoring the natural beauty that makes this place so special.”

The initiative has garnered a mixed but largely positive response. Many residents have expressed their delight at the renewed, open vista, with social media platforms filled with photos of the pristine new look. “It’s breathtaking,” said one Colombo resident, “I’ve lived here my whole life, and I forgot how stunning the view was without all the stalls blocking it.”
While the aesthetic improvements are clear, the displacement of the vendors raises concerns about their livelihoods. The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has stated it is working on a long-term solution to accommodate the displaced vendors in a more organized and regulated manner. Discussions are underway to establish designated zones with proper facilities that do not compromise the public space.
The re-imagined Galle Face Green now offers a clean, open space for families to fly kites, for couples to enjoy a sunset stroll, and for everyone to simply sit and watch the waves crash against the shore. The removal of the temporary shops marks a new chapter for one of Colombo’s most beloved landmarks, promising a return to its original glory and a renewed connection between the city and its magnificent coastline.
