Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) a short while ago, marking the first time in Sri Lanka’s history that a former Head of State has been taken into custody.
Wickremesinghe was arrested over allegations of misusing state funds to finance a personal visit to London during his presidency. He had arrived at the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) this morning to provide a statement when the arrest was made.
The investigation has also drawn in senior officials from Wickremesinghe’s administration. His personal secretary, Sandra Perera, was earlier summoned and questioned for several hours in connection with the same matter. Former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake has also been summoned to record a statement.
The case revolves around reports that state resources were unlawfully used for overseas trips undertaken by Wickremesinghe while in office.
This unprecedented arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny over financial accountability and the conduct of former political leaders.
