A discussion on challenges surrounding contractual employment between Israel and Sri Lanka was held yesterday (September 1, 2025) under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Overseas Employment Arun Hemachandra, with officials from Israel’s Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA).

Two key issues dominated the talks. The first related to complaints against fraudulent intermediaries involved in the recruitment of Sri Lankan nurses for employment in Israel. Reports highlighted instances of intermediaries demanding money, acquiring land or property in exchange for promises of jobs, and exerting undue pressure on both prospective and currently employed nurses.

The Deputy Minister assured that strict legal action will be taken against such individuals through the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). He further emphasized that the recruitment process for nurses will be streamlined with greater transparency to protect workers from exploitation.

The second area of focus was the hotel employment sector in Israel, where Sri Lankan workers have also faced difficulties. Both sides noted the positive responses received so far and agreed to work towards swift and effective solutions.
