After being unjustly detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) for 9 months and released on bail on 15th July 2025, Muhammad Suhail from Mawanella has been fully acquitted from the case by the Honourable Magistrate of Mount Lavinia Magistrate Court today.

When the case was taken up for hearing today (16.09.2025), Attorney-at-Law Ilham Hassanali from the Lawyers for Social Justice organization, appearing on behalf of Muhammad Suhail, submitted to the Magistrate that:
“Since the police have already submitted a report to the Court that the investigations have not revealed any evidence of a crime, it would be an injustice to continue keeping him bound to this case. Therefore, we humbly make an application to immediately discharge/acquit the suspect from the case.”

Accordingly, the Honourable Magistrate ordered that Muhammad Suhail be fully acquitted from the PTA case.

It is noteworthy that the Lawyers for Social Justice has also taken steps to file a Fundamental Rights petition before the Supreme Court of Srilanka on his behalf and notices had been issued. Senior Counsel Hejaaz Hizbullah Attorney-at-Law appeared for the Petitioner in this matter. The matter is to be taken up for granting of leave on 23/03/2026.
