The Court of Appeal today directed the Jaffna Municipal Council to take all necessary steps to reduce air pollution in the Jaffna area.

The order was delivered by a bench comprising Court of Appeal President Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya and Justice Priyantha Fernando, when a petition filed by Dr. Uma Sukhi Nadarajah, a Jaffna-based medical practitioner, was taken up for hearing.

During proceedings, Justice Abeysuriya questioned lawyers representing the respondents on whether any action had been taken under the provisions of the Environmental Acts to address the pollution issue. The court instructed the Municipal Council to implement preventive measures in accordance with the law and directed the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to provide necessary support to ensure compliance.

The petition alleged that air pollution in Jaffna was being caused by improper garbage disposal practices and the release of chemical waste into the environment. Dr. Nadarajah sought an order compelling authorities to take immediate steps to address the situation.
