The Ministry of Tourism has issued a statement addressing recent public debate over communications by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) regarding LGBTQ-themed events, affirming the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equality while clarifying that no specific campaign targeting LGBTQ+ foreign tourists has been approved.
“Sri Lanka has long been a welcoming destination for travellers from all walks of life. Our tourism legacy is built on the warmth of our people, the richness of our culture, and the breathtaking beauty of our landscapes. We remain committed to promoting inclusivity, mutual respect, and hospitality for all visitors,” the statement said.
Citing Article 12 of the Constitution and recent Supreme Court determinations, the ministry reiterated that equality for every citizen and foreign visitor—regardless of ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sex, or sexual orientation—remains a core national principle.
The statement stressed, however, that while proposals to promote LGBTQ+ tourism had been presented among other ideas, “the Government has not decided to run a specific tourism promotion campaign” in this regard. Any future initiatives, it added, would be evaluated carefully within the framework of national tourism priorities and social harmony.
Tourism officials also underscored that Sri Lanka respects all genders and communities but clarified that such respect “should not be misinterpreted as an endorsement or promotion of any particular sexual behaviours or activities.”
According to the SLTDA Chairman, the recent communication was part of broader global outreach efforts and “does not signal a change in the government’s core tourism strategy,” which continues to focus on cultural heritage, wellness, nature-based experiences, adventure tourism, and spiritual journeys.
Acknowledging public concerns raised by various groups, the ministry called for “understanding and calm” in approaching the matter. “Our strength as a nation lies in our ability to uphold dignity, fairness, and mutual respect for all,” the statement concluded.
