President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has urged the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) to prepare a comprehensive plan aimed at resolving delays in university degree programmes and enhancing the overall efficiency of Sri Lanka’s higher education system.

During a meeting held this morning (20) at the Presidential Secretariat, the President stressed the importance of a coordinated strategy to ensure the timely completion of degree programmes, effective workload management, and stronger research and development initiatives. He assured FUTA that the government will provide the necessary support and facilities to implement such a plan.

FUTA representatives briefed the President on key challenges currently affecting universities, including delays in programme completion, difficulties in recruiting and retaining qualified academic staff, and the need to improve the quality of higher education.

President Dissanayake called for swift and decisive action to address these issues, underscoring that systemic reforms are vital to strengthen the country’s university system and ensure it meets both national and global academic standards.
