The Meteorology Department announced that the low-pressure area located near the northern coast of Sri Lanka is expected to intensify further and move west-northwestward, likely developing into a Depression over the coastal areas of northern Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh by this evening (22).

As a result, showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Jaffna and Mannar districts. Fairly heavy rainfall of around 75 mm is likely in some areas, the Department said.

Elsewhere in the island, showers or thundershowers are expected after 1.00 p.m.

The Department further warned that fairly strong winds between 30–40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Western, Northern, North-central, North-western, and Southern provinces, and in the Trincomalee district.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
