A high-level meeting was held today (23 October) at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, jointly chaired by Deputy Minister of Ports and Aviation Janith Ruwan Kodituwakku and Defence Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha, to review and enhance airport security operations.
The discussions centered on strengthening overall security, curbing illegal activities, and improving coordination among agencies responsible for airport safety and border control.
Defence Secretary Thuyacontha underscored BIA’s strategic importance to national security, economic development, and international connectivity, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of passengers, staff, and airline crews.
Officials agreed to establish a comprehensive coordination mechanism to streamline collaboration between all relevant authorities for a more efficient and unified approach to airport security.
Following the meeting, top officials, including the Deputy Minister and Defence Secretary, inspected existing security measures at the airport.
Senior representatives from the Ministry of Ports and Aviation, Sri Lanka Customs, State Intelligence Service (SIS), Civil Aviation Authority, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Military and Air Intelligence, Police, Tri-Forces, and other state agencies participated in the discussions.
