Parliament on Tuesday (21) adopted the Committee Stage amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), the Ministry of Digital Economy announced.
The Ministry said the PDPA Amendment Bill, which earlier received Cabinet approval, was passed at its Second Reading on 3 June. Following that, the Legal Draftsman’s Department, in consultation with the Attorney General’s Department, identified a series of minor amendments to be introduced during the Committee Stage at the request of the Ministry of Digital Economy.
According to the Ministry, the Committee Stage amendments approved by the Cabinet were adopted by Parliament without debate. The Third Reading of the Bill, incorporating these amendments, was also passed on the same day.
The updated PDPA aims to strengthen the legal framework governing the collection, processing, and protection of personal data in Sri Lanka, ensuring alignment with global standards on data privacy and digital governance.
