The opening day of the 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championship at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi proved to be a stellar one for team Sri Lanka, which collected two gold medals and one silver on Friday (24).In the men’s 100 metres, Chamod Yodasinghe stormed to gold with a time of 10.30 seconds, setting a new championship record and earning the title of South Asia’s fastest man.

Earlier, Pasindu Malshan secured Sri Lanka’s first gold of the event by winning the men’s triple jump with a leap of 16.19 metresIn the men’s 5,000-metre event, Viknaraj Vakshan claimed the silver medal for Sri Lanka, adding another podium finish to the nation’s tally.

Athletes from six South Asian nations — India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives — are participating in the championship, which spans multiple track & field events over the coming days.

Sri Lanka’s strong start raises hopes for further podium finishes and signals a resurgence in the country’s athletics programme at the regional level.
