Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya today (24) informed Parliament that the Government of Sri Lanka has formally notified the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) of its opposition to an international mechanism to investigate human rights violations in the country.

She stated that such mechanisms could create divisions among communities, and therefore the government intends to maintain sovereignty in handling related matters.

However, PM Amarasuriya emphasised that Sri Lanka has assured the OHCHR of its commitment to establishing a credible domestic mechanism to address rights violations.

“The government will work with international organisations while focusing on a domestic mechanism to deal with human rights violations,” she said.

The Prime Minister reiterated that while cooperation with global bodies will continue, accountability efforts must remain locally driven to ensure national unity and stability.
