The opening day of the 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championship at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi proved to be a stellar one for team Sri Lanka, which collected four gold medals, three silver and three bronze on Friday (24 October).
Athletes from six South Asian nations — India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives — are participating in the championship, which spans multiple track & field events over the coming days.
100m Men Chamod Yodasinghe won the gold medal with a time of 11.30 seconds. Sandun Diyalawatta finished fourth, clocking 10.64 seconds.
100m Women Safiya Yamic clinched gold with a meet record of 11.53 seconds. Amasha de Silva secured silver with a time of 11.72 seconds.
Triple Jump Men Pasindu Malshan won gold with a leap of 16.19 metres.
Triple Jump Women Madushani Herath claimed gold with a meet record of 13.26 metres. Sashini Upeksha earned bronze with a jump of 12.79 metres.
5000m Men Viknaraj Vaksha secured silver with a time of 14:23.21.
5000m Women Rasana Wijesuriya placed fourth, finishing in 16:47.21.
Shot Put Men Suseenthirakumar Mithun Raj won bronze with a throw of 14.68 metres.
Shot Put Women Ovini Chandrasekara claimed bronze with a throw of 13.03 metres.
4x400m Mixed Relay Sri Lanka won silver with a time of 3:20.85. The team comprised Kalinga Kumarage, Nadeesha Ramanayaka, Kalhara Indupa, and Sayuri Mendis.
