A group of MPs calling for the establishment of an Independent Youth Commission of Sri Lanka, aimed at strengthening youth participation in governance and rebuilding confidence in the democratic process.

The proposal, submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, requests the appointment of a Select Committee to study the need for such a Commission and make recommendations based on national priorities and global best practices.

The MPs stress that Sri Lanka’s young population remains the country’s most powerful resource, but warn that increasing disillusionment, unemployment, and a widening trust gap have distanced many youth from policymaking and civic engagement.

The letter states that restoring youth confidence is crucial to “safeguard Sri Lanka’s democratic foundations” and ensure young people feel “represented, included and heard.”

According to the proposal, an Independent Youth Commission would Address unemployment and skills gaps, Improve access to digital resources, Support youth entrepreneurship, Strengthen mental health and social support systems and Promote civic participation and national integration

The Select Committee would also assess the legal and constitutional framework required to establish a transparent, independent and non-partisan body.

The initiative emphasizes the need for Parliament to reconnect with the next generation and ensure they see national institutions as responsive to their aspirations rather than distant or disconnected.

The proposal has been signed by MPs Ravi Karunanayake, Mujibur Rahman, Chathura Galappaththi, Sujith Sanjaya Perera, G.G. Ponnambalam and Chamindranee Kiriella.
