Sri Lanka Customs arrested an Indian national at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for attempting to smuggle heroin into the country, underscoring ongoing cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in combating transnational drug trafficking.
The 39-year-old passenger, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 315 on October 26, was apprehended by the Customs Narcotics Control Unit following a detailed inspection that uncovered 2.8 kg of heroin concealed inside a modified compartment in his luggage.
The seized narcotics — weighing 2,832 grams and valued at nearly Rs. 85 million — were confiscated as part of Sri Lanka’s intensified border protection initiatives.
Authorities noted that India has been a strong regional partner in anti-narcotics enforcement, with both countries regularly sharing intelligence and collaborating on joint operations to curb trafficking networks across South Asia.
The suspect is to be handed over to the Police Narcotics Bureau for further investigation and legal proceedings.
