A major digital transformation initiative to bolster educational infrastructure in the Pirivena system was announced following decisions made at the 204th meeting of the Pirivena Education Board, chaired by Education Minister and Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The meeting emphasised equipping Pirivenas with modern learning resources — including internet connectivity and smart classroom facilities — so that students in these traditional institutions can fully benefit from the country’s broader education reforms.
In addition, plans were outlined to provide advanced training for teachers and administrative staff, enabling them to support the digital shift effectively.
Minister Amarasuriya highlighted the importance of creating pathways for high-performing Pirivena students — academically and culturally — to remain within this Buddhist educational environment while also meeting contemporary educational standards. She said a structured mechanism will be put in place to evaluate and retain such talent.
Senior Buddhist clergy, including Venerable Narampanawe Ananda Anunayake Thero and other Mahanayake Theros, along with top officials from the Ministry of Education, participated in the discussions—underscoring the collaborative approach to the forthcoming reforms in the Pirivena sector.
