Sri Lanka has signed an agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to obtain a USD 90 million loan aimed at strengthening connections between rural communities and key socio-economic centres, the Ministry of Finance announced.
According to the Ministry, the funds will be used to upgrade approximately 500 kilometers of rural access roads to all-weather, climate-resilient standards, ensuring inclusivity for the elderly, women, children, and persons with disabilities.
The project will also support the rehabilitation of 21 kilometers of national roads and the maintenance of 100 kilometers of rural access roads, enhancing overall connectivity and transport efficiency in rural areas.
This financing marks Tranche 5 of the Second Integrated Road Investment Program (iRoad 2), a long-term initiative to modernize Sri Lanka’s rural road network.
The loan agreement was signed on October 31 by Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma and Takafumi Kadono, Country Director of the ADB, at the Ministry of Finance.
