The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has temporarily called off the island-wide strike that was scheduled to commence at 8.00 a.m. today (31).

In a statement, the GMOA announced that the decision was made following a special discussion held last night (30) between Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the Director General of Health Services, and representatives of the GMOA.

According to the association, the Ministry of Health has agreed to suspend the arbitrary transfer of doctors, which had been initiated in violation of the standard procedure. The transfers will now be implemented within a specific timeframe and in accordance with the accepted methodology.

The GMOA added that these agreements are expected to be officially confirmed during a meeting with the Ministry’s administrative doctors scheduled for today.

Considering the progress made, the GMOA’s Executive Council has decided to extend the suspension of the planned strike until 12 noon today, pending written confirmation of the agreements.

However, the association cautioned that if the Ministry fails to honor the agreements as promised, the strike action will resume at any time.
