A virtual meeting was held to discuss the implementation modalities of the proposed India–Sri Lanka power grid interconnection project.
The Indian delegation was led by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, while the Sri Lankan delegation was headed by Prof. K.T.M. Udayanga Hemapala, Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Government of Sri Lanka.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed key aspects related to the project’s implementation, following the confirmation of technical parameters for the interconnection during a meeting held in New Delhi on June 16, 2025.
The cross-border transmission line aims to enable Sri Lanka to import electricity during supply shortages and export surplus renewable energy, thereby generating much-needed foreign exchange.
The project is also expected to help diversify Sri Lanka’s energy mix, strengthen grid stability, and facilitate integration into the regional power market.
Both countries agreed to continue their dialogue to finalize the implementation framework and ensure timely progress on the project.
