The Gampaha High Court today sentenced 12 suspects to death in connection with the killing of former Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his personal security officer.
The incident took place on May 9, 2022, in the Nittambuwa area, where MP Athukorala and his security officer were killed in a mob attack. Several individuals linked to the incident were subsequently arrested.
Following investigations, the Attorney General filed indictments against 42 suspects before the Gampaha High Court over the two murders.
After a lengthy trial, a three-judge bench delivered its verdict today, imposing the death sentence on 12 of the accused.
