Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has called on Pakistani authorities to treat former Prime Minister Imran Khan with “humanity and dignity,” describing him as an inspiration who transcended both cricket and politics.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ranatunga said Khan was admired not only by millions in Pakistan but also by many young cricketers across the region.

“Imran Khan was not only an inspiration for millions of Pakistanis, but was also someone whom I, and many other young cricketers, admired and aspired to be,” Ranatunga said. “He transcended beyond cricket and politics. He was a symbol of hope, a patriot who carried his nation’s dreams on his shoulders, and an icon respected beyond Pakistan’s borders.”

Khan, who famously led Pakistan to victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup before entering politics, is currently detained amid ongoing legal proceedings in the country.

Ranatunga stressed that regardless of political circumstances, compassion should prevail.

“At this difficult time, I urge the authorities in Pakistan to treat him with humanity and dignity,” he said. “Whatever the circumstances may be, it is important that compassion prevails. I implore that proper care and fairness be given to a man who has dedicated his life to his country.”

The 1996 World Cup-winning Sri Lanka captain added that differences should be set aside during challenging times.

“Before the politician and before the cricketer, there was Imran Khan — a human being deserving empathy, compassion, and humanity,” he said.

Ranatunga’s remarks add to a growing list of international cricketing figures who have spoken publicly regarding Khan’s situation.
